How often do you focus on something that happened during the day that you didn’t like?

You may have paused in your thoughts to chastise, scold, or reprimand yourself over this experience.

As human beings we don’t like to make mistakes or do something other than what we intended so to correct this in the future we think about what happened over and over and over and over again in our minds. Thus creating a lot of “chatter” in our heads.

I’m not saying that we shouldn’t think about correcting our past thoughts/actions/behaviors but instead of letting the internal drama take over and flooding our minds with negativity and regret why not try something else instead? Something that can have a profound impact in your life.

Jack Canfield once said,

“Successful people maintain a positive focus in life no matter what is going on around them. They stay focused on their past successes rather than their past failures, and on the next action steps they need to take to get them closer to the fulfillment of their goals rather than all the other distractions that life presents to them.”

Positive thinking will lead to positive feelings which will contribute to positive actions. Likewise, focusing on only the negative will lead to feeling negatively and contribute to negative actions (or inaction). Ex: I can’t believe I said that! I’m so embarrassed. Which leads to feeling embarrassed, shame, regret – which then leads to my actions – what will these feelings motivate me to do? Hide? Not speak up next time? Avoid people?

We will all have failures, lots of them. We’re human. We’re supposed to! So why not try this idea from Jack where he invites us to focus on our past successes instead of focusing only on our past negatives.

He gives a challenge where he asks if you can name 100 of your past successes you’ve had in your life. Can you do it? Try it, see how far you get – just in your head, try to name as many successes as you can.

Another way to stay positive and have a mindset that focuses on your positives is to simply write all your “wins” down. Why not try and create a VICTORY board? I’m pretty visual so I love taking pictures and journaling. Grab a notebook, PRINT OFF THE FREEBIE (click on Victory!), or even get a cork board and add to your VICTORY board every day and see what happens for you.

Each time you add something to your board you’re acknowledging the good, positive things in your life – the good, positive things YOU created and contributed to. This softens the failures. This makes the failures not as detrimental as they once could have been because you’ll have tangible proof that you are successful, that you’re working towards becoming more refined, proof that you’re trying.

One of my favorite quotes says,
“Heavenly Father knows of all your successes; though they may seem small to you, He acknowledges and cherishes each one of them.” – Dieter F. Uchtdorf

If the creator of the universe, all powerful, omnipotent being knows, sees, acknowledges, and CHERISHES each and every success, no matter how big or small they are, wouldn’t you want to as well?

If they’re important enough to Him, shouldn’t we realize how special they should be to us too?

Start today. Write down each and every success – even if it’s just “biting your tongue” and not retaliating against a rude or insensitive remark from another. That’s a win, right? Success! Write it down. Later it might make you laugh but it will also show you that you could do that then so for sure you can do it again, and again, and again until you’re no longer wanting to retaliate but can look on others that seek to demean or ridicule with compassion and with love.

Ignoring or not reacting to that one person may seem SMALL to you, but it’s NOT to your Father in Heaven. He acknowledges that you chose charity over your own justice. He CHERISHES that you chose love over discord.

Mel Robbins said something along the lines of, “Even adults need gold stars too, even if they’re imaginary.” – Give yourself a gold star. Take a few moments each day to write, review, and cherish each and every win.

You’ll start to notice a change happening in you. You’ll feel the power of added positivity to your day and in turn it will motivate you towards more positive thoughts, feelings, and actions in your life.
